About this Event
Albertans will go to the polls on October 19 to answer ten referendum questions – including whether the province should initiate a binding vote to separate from Canada. The MRU Faculty of Arts is pleased to host Professor Jared Welsey for a Current Events in Arts lecture to help us make sense of why an independence referendum was held, and what the results mean for the future of Alberta, with a Q&A moderated by host Kathleen Petty.
Dr. Jared Wesley (Academic Director of the Peter Lougheed School of Politics and Democracy at the University of Alberta, Professor of Political Science, and member of the Black Faculty Collective) is the country’s leading expert on prairie politics, populism, and political culture. As a lead researcher in Common Ground, Dr. Wesley and his team have spent more than a year embedded in the independence movement attending rallies, running focus groups, and tracking public opinion across the province. Please join us for a rare, comprehensive view of who supported the referendum questions, why, and what comes next for Alberta’s relationship with Canada.
