A Journey Through the North End
Boston's North End, often called the city's Little Italy, is an enclave with a rich history and a culture rooted in family, food, and faith. Once home to hardworking Italian immigrant families, it was also the neighborhood of Sacco and Vanzetti, Charles Ponzi, and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Organizations such as the North End Industrial Home and North Bennet Street School helped educate and serve the community. With St. Leonard of Port Maurice Church at its heart, la via vecchia ("the old way") is woven through the neighborhood's narrow, winding streets, brick buildings, restaurants, and pastry shops. Today, neighbors and visitors gather for coffee and cannoli, often unaware of the area's complex history. Annino traces the North End's resilient journey from one of America's poorest slums to a place of opportunity.
Meet the Storyteller: Patricia M. Annino
Annino is a Boston estate-planning attorney with more than 30 years of experience serving families, individuals, and closely held businesses. Of Irish and Italian descent, she lives in the North End with her husband. She deeply admires her family's resilience and perseverance on their journey from Italy to Boston. Walking the neighborhood's streets and attending Mass at St. Leonard's strengthens her connection to her Italian roots and reminds her that the spirit of Italian immigrants remains present throughout the enclave.
She also serves on the NEHS Board of Directors and has played an instrumental role in establishing the museum.
