A director must fully envision the whole story of a movie well before filming starts, setting the tone, pace, and style of the story. What is the color palette of the film? The setting? Is the lighting soft or harsh? Camera angles? Musical Score? Does the sound help tell the story when there is no dialogue? Does the point of view propel the story forward? What suits the story best? What do the actors need? Do they need help finding the core truth of their characters or do they need you to step out of the way? A talented director knows how to problem-solve these and countless other questions on the fly. And no two directors will solve the story math the same way.
