A Halloween Celebration of Musical Cross-Pollination!
This Halloween, a peculiar musical garden is sprouting in Southeast Portland!
Roots from Veracruz, West Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and beyond will tangle, intertwine, and bear some delightfully unexpected fruit. Strings will sing, drums will converse, feet will fly, and strange new musical organisms may emerge from the underbrush.
Join us at Past Lives for an evening of music, dance, and rhythmic mischief featuring:
🪕 SON HUITZILIN — Son Jarocho from Veracruz, Mexico! Traditional stringed instruments, poetic verses, and the infectious rhythms of percussive dance.
🌳 BAOBAB TRIO — Rooted in the Mandinke musical traditions of West Africa, with cello adding unexpected branches to an already rich musical canopy.
🥁 DANZA CULTURA — Featuring members of Bloco Alegria, bringing Brazilian batucada and Colombian cumbia to the dance floor. Prepare your dancing appendages!
🔥 WAHALA — Afrobeats DJ sets with live drums, keeping the musical ecosystem bubbling, pulsing, and evolving.
🧪 PLUS! Surprise collaborations, spontaneous musical mutations, and other unidentified rhythmic phenomena!
🍄 A Few Things to Know
- All ages welcome! Bring the family, your friends, your neighbors, and your favorite musical miscreants.
- Costumes encouraged! Halloween finery, botanical disguises, and other curious plumage are most welcome.
- Food and libations! Beer, wine, liquor, and food will be available for purchase.
- Come and go! Swing through between your other Halloween peregrinations, or better yet, settle in for the whole glorious harvest.
- Dancing highly encouraged! Curiosity required. Shoes optional only in the metaphorical sense.
