The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage is the result of a collection of African American educators, artists, and historians who have collaborated to give the long-dormant history of African Americans in their region the voice and platform it deserves. This group evolved from the Louisville and Jefferson County African American Heritage Committee into its current mold, with a single unifying goal of promoting the Kentuckiana region’s black heritage.

In 1994, The African American Heritage Foundation (AAHF) had the initial goal of encouraging the preservation of African American sites, communities and culture. This began with the preservation of historic structures in the African American community, and the recognition of important sites through its historic marker program. Now, the AAHF has opened a Center, located at 18th and Muhammed Ali Blvd. in Louisville, Kentucky. The Center is dedicated to the sole purpose of showcasing these triumphs. Here, African American history has the platform to share its monumental achievements with the community in which it took place.

KCAAH’s goals are to enhance the public’s knowledge about the history, heritage and cultural contributions of African Americans in Kentucky. In addition to its commitment to preserving the traditions and accomplishments of the past, the Center is a vital, contemporary institution, providing space for performances of all types. Mike Phillips is recognized as one of the most dynamic instrumentalists in contemporary jazz. Phylicia Rae is an American smooth jazz bassist, singer, and composer, celebrated for her innovative playing, chart‑topping singles, and leadership in the contemporary jazz scene.

Born and raised in Rochester,NY Phylicia Rae developed a love for music at an early age. She became a prominent figure in the music scene in Rochester, NY playing for different bands in the city.

Her first single as a solo artist “Just Like That” was released in September 2020, followed by her national debut with her second single “Told You So” which received steady airplay on national radio stations as well as internet radio across the country. Phylicia’s third single “That’s It” ferociously climbed the Billboard “New and Active” chart establishing herself as one of the young talented vanguards of the contemporary jazz genre.
In 2021 Phylicia Rae joined as the newest member of the group Jazz In Pink headed by Gail Johnson and signed to the Next Paradigm label. Since then she has shared the stage with many amazing artists in the smooth jazz genre such as Kim Scott and Jacob Webb. In 2022 Phylicia became the co-founder of the jazz series “Next Paradigm Live”, bringing in top jazz icons such as Lin Rountree, Marcus Anderson, Kim Scott, Phillip Doc Martin, Art Sherrod Jr. and many others. Today Phylicia is breaking down the boundaries of the this genre, inspiring younger female musicians that dreams can come true!
