About this Event

This is a fun opportunity to design your own graphic novel! Author Karina Evans will teach the basics of writing a graphic novel script – how to think about story, characters, and scenes, and then Illustrator Andrea Bell will take attendees through the visual side and how to bring those ideas to life through drawing and creative choices. You’ll leave with your very own little graphic novel!

And be sure to pick up your very own signed copy of Framed, Karina and Andrea's new graphic novel!

About the participants:

Karina Evans is the author of Grow Up, Tahlia Wilkins! and Audrey Covington Breaks the Rules. She studied English at the University of Delaware before starting a career in the entertainment industry. Some of Karina’s favorite things include: See’s Candies, The Amazing Race, singing show tunes in the car, and volleyball. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her two mischievous cats, Sir Pounce and Taika.

Andrea Bell is an illustrator and comic artist who grew up playing in the northern woods of Wisconsin. Her memories of adventure, nature, and adolescent independence are reflected throughout her work. Andrea is the artist behind The Leak, the Diary of a 5th Grade Outlaw trilogy, and Crumble. She currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, where she enjoys long walks, baking, and curating dance playlists.

About Framed:

Besties meets The Breakfast Club in Framed, a young middle grade graphic novel about a girl named Toby who has been wrongfully accused of throwing out other students’ art projects.

Lately, Toby has had a bad attitude. In art class, her mood goes from bad to worse when she’s given the assignment to paint something important to her. But before she can finish, she throws it out, snaps at her teacher, and is sent straight to detention. While in detention, Toby’s art teacher storms in makes a big accusation: she says Toby threw out not just her painting, but all of her classmatespaintings, too…They were found just outside the art classroom in a trash can, and now Toby is in big trouble.

Toby knows she hasn’t been the easiest person to be around lately, but she would never vandalize her classmates’ stuff—she’s been framed! Can Toby get to the bottom of this mystery before the end of the school day, or will she find herself stuck in detention for the foreseeable future?
