Craft Futures: Material Knowledge and Additive TechnologiesAbout this Event
This Design x Technology Series talk features Associate Professor of Design Bilge Nur Saltık. Led by Associate Professor and Director of Product Design Carla Diana, this presentation and discussion will provide our guests with a thoughtfully guided interview.
This talk examines Bilge Nur Saltık’s practice-based research at the intersection of traditional craft knowledge, material culture, and contemporary production technologies. Through material experimentation and collaborative modes of making, her scholarship investigates how embodied knowledge and established craft processes can engage with digital fabrication, emerging materials, and evolving systems of production. Drawing upon her broader research trajectory and recent sabbatical work, Saltık positions making as both a methodological framework and a mode of knowledge production. Her research considers how technology can extend rather than displace craft traditions, while facilitating new relationships among material, process, cultural memory, functionality, and poetic expression.
Participants will gain a critical understanding of how additive manufacturing and digital fabrication are reshaping material practice and the future of craftsmanship. The presentation offers a framework for examining how emerging technologies can extend embodied craft knowledge, support new modes of production, and contribute to the evolution of practice-based design research
