Democracy club: Accessible communication and democracySpeaker: Mira Kainulainen
Place: Kumppanuustalo Artteli, Mustanlahdenkatu 22, Tampere
Time: Wednesday 21.10.2026 at 19:00-21:00
In modern society, information is the key to social participation and democracy. We live in a world flooded with different kinds of messages, forms, digital systems and other text content. Not understanding that content means that you can’t take care of your own errands, such as apply for benefits, deal with government officials or book a doctor’s appointment online. Therefore, accessible communication is vital to social inclusion, equality and functioning democracy. Accessibility refers to designing services, systems and products so that they can be used by everyone – including, for instance, people who have difficulties reading, who are learning the majority language of a society or are visually impaired. Accessible communication means applying this thinking to communication: be it official documents, websites or social media posts.
Mira Kainulainen is doctoral researcher of translation studies at Tampere University. In her dissertation, she studies the use of comic documents in social services. Her broader research interests include many types of visualisations, Easy Language and audio description (a service for the blind and visually impaired in which visuals, such as pictures, are described in words).
Mira’s presentation at Democracy Club consists of three parts. First, she will give an overview of accessible communication. Second, she discusses how it can be applied to different areas of society. Third, she delves into the role of accessible communication in activism. How can we ensure that everyone can participate in building a better society? How can we remove language and communication as barriers for participation for disabled people, language learners and people who are new to the activist scene? After the presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion.

DEMOCRACY CLUB is a progressive politics discussion forum in English. We make conversations about the growing challenges democracies around the world, including in Finland, are facing. We encourage an understanding of current political developments and political history as ways to resist democratic backsliding and defend our existing rights. We normally meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Kumppanuustalo Artteli at 7pm onwards, unless otherwise mentioned. We are non-partisan, open to all, and we follow safer space principles.
