Defunding Our Future: Unequal Education & the Impact of School Vouchers

Public schools belong to all of us. They should give every child—regardless of family background—the chance to learn, thrive, and build a future.

However, public money is increasingly being directed to private education through vouchers and Education Savings Accounts. Charter schools continue to expand. And now AI-driven schools are becoming the next frontier of privatization—putting technology controlled by private companies in place of qualified teachers, public accountability, and community control.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s public schools remain among the worst-funded in the nation. Years of underfunding, low teacher pay, and the deprofessionalization of teaching have pushed educators and schools to the breaking point. And because schools depend heavily on local property taxes, where you live can determine how much your school has to spend—deepening class and racial inequality.
