Serious violence involving weapons is not something that exists only in movies. NSW recorded 79,624 assault victims in 2024, up 4% on the previous year, with more than 2,200 assaults involving a weapon. There were also 124 victims of homicide and related offences, 52% of which involved a weapon.And firearms remain present in serious crime. In the year to March 2025, NSW recorded 93 robberies involving a firearm and 773 robberies involving another weapon. By March 2026, prohibited and regulated weapons offences had reached 14,593 incidents, compared with 12,475 a decade earlier.
The aim isn't to make you afraid of walking through Sydney. It's the opposite.
