Get ready for three days where serious learning meets serious fun! Ditch the fluorescent office lights and stuffy conference rooms for walking trails, good food, and training that actually sticks! Expect interactive sessions and plenty of laughter alongside the serious work of enhancing your clinical skills. Join us for a retreat where you’ll leave with more than just notes-you’ll have new techniques, new colleagues, and renewed enthusiasm for your vital work.
What We Will Learn:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is sometimes learned as a collection of processes, techniques, and exercises. Yet effective ACT practice requires something more fluid: the ability to notice what behavior is organized around, understand its function in context, and respond in ways that create opportunities for greater behavioral flexibility.
This two-day experiential workshop places functional analysis at the center of ACT practice and explores creative hopelessness as the work of non-attachment, helping clients loosen their investment in strategies and agendas that have become rigid, costly, or ineffective. Rather than treating creative hopelessness as something a therapist “does to” a client to demonstrate that particular strategies do not work, participants will learn to use functional analysis to notice the client’s agenda, identify the consequences that maintain patterns of behavior, and help clients contact the workability of those patterns through direct experience.
Importantly, this work occurs on both sides of the therapeutic relationship. Just as clients may become attached to controlling anxiety, eliminating painful memories, obtaining certainty, or avoiding vulnerability, therapists can become attached to making symptoms decrease, getting clients to accept, completing an exercise successfully, or producing a particular therapeutic response. These therapist agendas can inadvertently reproduce the very rigidity ACT seeks to address.
Through demonstration, experiential exercises, clinical examples, and practice, participants will learn to track both client and therapist behavior in the moment and use the therapeutic relationship itself as a context for functional analysis, non-attachment, and behavioral change.
