Human beings have always had a variety of ways of organizing themselves into communities. Inevitably, hierarchies develop as the need for structure and control within a group grows. Also inevitably, eventually some cultures or societies become large enough to begin, usually through warfare or some other form of aggression, structuring and controlling - colonizing - other cultures. It should not be surprising that religions become caught up in this colonization. For instance, when Roman Emperor Constantine began his process of converting to Christianity in 312 C.E., what seemed to be a benefit to the faith actually began a long journey of colonization of the church itself, subverting many of Christianity's central principles.
On Sunday, October 18, at 2:30 PM, Jazz Sanctuary will explore "Decolonizing the Church" with liturgy and song. The Rev. Renee' Rouse, member of the Jazz Sanctuary House Band, will give a brief presentation, there will be readings and prayers, and we'll all have a chance to sing songs like "We Shall Overcome" and "Get Up, Stand Up."
You can join us in person at First Congregational Church, 79 Clinton St. in Concord or tune into the livestream on YouTube at ConcordsFirstChurch. Either way, we think you'll find this an inspiring and community-building experience - AND WE WILL HAVE FUN!!
Wherever you are and because of who you are on your life's journey, you are welcome here!
