Take a relaxing morning walk around the Northwest Stream Center's (NWSC) elevated boardwalk and see how birds benefit from this protected habitat made up of complex wetland systems and pockets of upland old second growth forest. Attendees will get to enjoy early access to the Northwest Stream Center before it opens to the public!Led by experienced birders and bird photographers Sarah Blackstone and Melchor Berona (also an AASF Board member), these walks will include information on the life histories and habits of the birds we find and offer hints for identifying and finding your target species when out on birding expeditions. We’ll talk a bit about choosing and using binoculars, how to find and use a couple of birding apps, and the pros and cons of various kinds of field guides.
While you never know what birds might show themselves on any given day, the NWSC hosts dozens of species including ducks, woodpeckers, crossbills, owls, waxwings, creepers, nuthatches and many other Pacific Northwest birds. Come join the fun as we spy on our feathered friends in the rich ecosystem at the NWSC.
Monthly Bird Walks at the Northwest Stream Center will take place on the third Thursday morning of each month.
10 spaces will be available for each walk- preregistration is required.
$8 for AASF Members, $10 for General Admission.
Register in the Nature Store at the Northwest Stream Center, online at www.streamkeeper.org, or by calling 425-316-8592.
Upcoming Bird Walks:
Thursday October 22nd, 8am-10am
Thursday November 19th, 8am-10am
Thursday December 17th, 8am-10am
*Times may vary slightly as winter progresses and the days shorten. Event times will be adjusted, and all registered attendees will be notified accordingly.
Additional sessions in 2027 TBD.
Please arrive at the Northwest Stream Center by 8AM sharp, dressed and prepared for the weather (sun, heat or rain and cold, comfortable walking shoes, etc.). It is recommended that attendees bring their own binoculars although there are up to 8 binoculars available to borrow from the NWSC if you do not own your own. Cameras are also permitted and encouraged equipment to bring along.
If for any reason a walk must be rescheduled, attendees will be notified at least 24 hours in advance- registration can be transferred to a new date or refunded. Typically, the only reason a walk would be postponed is if projected sustained winds are above 20mph, or there is extreme, inclement weather, making birding and learning out on the elevated boardwalk unsafe.
If you have any questions please reach out to [email protected] or call 425-316-8592.

About the Guides:
About Sarah Blackstone:
Now retired, she spent her career as a theatre artist and university administrator. She taught at several universities (including University of Washington and the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia). She was a university Dean of Fine Arts for 17 years—7 years in California and 10 years at the University of Victoria. Now she is a bird photographer. She
travels widely in central and south America, across the US, and this fall Australia, taking pictures of birds and she spends many hours photographing birds in and around the Seattle area.
With the advent of digital photography, a secondary hobby became an all-consuming passion. Her knowledge of bird behavior made it easy to find interesting birds and practice her new skills, and her hobbies continued to co-exist—each supporting and encouraging the other. There is nothing she would rather be doing than taking photos of our feathered neighbors, and it is wonderful to be able to share her knowledge and photos with others who find their beauty and mystery compelling. Check out her website wingsandfeathers.com if you’d like to see some of her photos.
About Melchor Berona:
Melchor, his 4 siblings, and his parents were all born in the Philippines. Their family moved to the mainland US and settled in Seattle, Washington during the early 1960’s. He became a US citizen, as the result of his Father being in the US Army. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) degree at the University of Washington, became his parents’ dream come true. This achievement allowed him to have a fulfilling career in the Construction industry, as a license Professional Mechanical Engineer and business owner. He has spent over 40 years specializing in the design of Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing system design in buildings.
His passion is and will always be in photography. He loves any subject matter, but landscape and bird photography are the main ones. He loves to learn and come up with interpretations of the images he is creating, while respecting the subject and its environment. He is thankful for and owe all his successes to his wife, his family, mentors, and friends.
Melchor is also a Board Member of the AASF, and visits the NWSC often to take beautiful photographs of flora and fauna to share with the AASF community.
