FULL TRANSPARENCY: Not many people know this about me but I struggle with mental health. I have been diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder in 2019 after YEARS of battling a mental illness that I couldn’t pin point what it was. I have gone through a myriad of therapists, psychiatrists, and medications including hospital stays and outpatient therapies. More than I like to admit. It’s been a long hard process trying to find the right “cocktail” of a mental health team with the proper medicine that supports a life of stability. Often times I have felt defeated and discouraged trying new therapists, psychiatrists, and medications and it failing. I finally have the best mental health team alongside the correct medications for me. I attend a support group for my bipolar disorder called DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance). Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of people of color in the group. So I have decided to start my own group that is a branch of the DBSA support group. It’s going to serve the BIPOC community in hopes of continuing to normalize mental illness in this community. The world we live in currently, we need as much support as possible. This group is strictly peer led which means no licensed professionals facilitate. This is a group led by us for us. The group will have different subjects and topics each week and it’s an open discussion concept. The group will be held on Thursday nights at St Paul United Methodist Church at 2000 Douglas Blvd. The first meeting will be on April 23rd and will be held every Thursday from 7:30-8:30pm in room 110
**You do not have to be diagnosed with a mental illness to join the group. If you feel like you need support with your mental health, this space is for you. Come. Join me. You will not regret it.
