Community Celebration in CornwallDía de los Muertos – Community Celebration
Saturday 31 October | 2:00–4:30pm | Chacewater Village Hall
Join IWN’s Spanish-speaking community for a colourful afternoon celebrating Día de los Muertos – Day of the Dead .
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that brings families and communities together to remember and celebrate the lives of people who have died. Rather than being a day simply about loss, it is filled with colour, food, music, creativity and memories of the people we continue to carry with us.
For our community celebration, we’ll be bringing some of that spirit to Cornwall with an afternoon of crafts, music, dance and food , with opportunities to learn more about the traditions and meaning behind Día de los Muertos.
Whether this celebration is part of your own culture, you are part of Cornwall’s Spanish-speaking community, or you would simply like to come along, learn and celebrate with us, you are very welcome.
What to expect:
- Crafts and creative activities
-Music and dance
- Día de los Muertos traditions
- Food to share
- A chance to meet people and spend time together
Creative Workshop with Mexican Artist Leonor Padilla-Hall
We're delighted to welcome Mexican artist Leonor Padilla-Hall , creator of Jali Hali , a collection of handmade characters and creations brought to life with love, personality and emotion.
As part of our Día de los Muertos celebration, Leonor will be sharing some of the traditions and symbolism behind this special Mexican celebration through a colourful, hands-on creative workshop for children and families. Participants will have the opportunity to make beautiful marigold decorations and/or decorate their own colourful skull masks, using simple materials, bright colours and plenty of imagination.
Along the way, Leonor will introduce the meaning of Día de los Muertos, including the importance of marigold flowers, decorated skulls and traditional decorations such as papel picado .
It's a lovely opportunity for families to create something together, learn about Mexican culture and take home their handmade creations as a reminder of the day.
All materials will be provided, and younger children are welcome to join in with support from their parents or carers.
