Dax Butler is a seasoned South African singer-songwriter whose gravelly storytelling and blues-soaked sound evoke legends like Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. His music is shaped by a life rich in adventure, hard-earned wisdom, resilience, and a deep love for song.Born and raised in Alberton, Johannesburg, Butler travelled extensively through Europe and the United States before joining the English Merchant Navy, collecting stories and musical influences along the way. Returning to South Africa in the late 1970s, he became a fixture in the local music scene, performing in bands such as The Other Band, Nude Red, Benny B Funk and The Sons of Gaddafi’s Barmitzva Band, while also writing jingles and soundtracks for television.
After stepping away from the spotlight for a time, Butler returned to music with renewed purpose, launching his solo career later in life and forming The Dax Butler Band in 2011. Since then, he has released four solo albums and performed across South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana. Now based in Muizenberg after many years near Knysna, Dax continues to write and perform with the same honesty, grit and soul that have defined his remarkable journey.
