About this Event
Dave Hewitt and Dana Ali in conversation with Karen Gabay
An enticing in conversation brought to us by our great friends at Manchester Digital Music Archive.
Dave Hewitt, guitarist with the band Babe Ruth released ‘The Mexican’ in 1972, which went on to be the most heavily sampled track in global HipHop circles.
This in-conversation will talk about the history of the track and Dave’s subsequent travels to the States in pursuit of the Blues, and meeting his wife Atlanta soul singer Dana Ali.
We’ll hear about how a British band came to create a break loved by HipHop and dance musicians, B Girls and B Boys. The full circle of Dave’s love of the of the Blues leading him to the USA and back to Yorkshire, with Dana, inspired by musicians such as sister Rosetta Tharpe, and their attendance at the Blue Plaque unveiling for her in August in Manchester.
