About this Event
In 2004 Darryl White brought his quintet to Kansas City to record live at the Blue Room, with Bobby Watson sitting in. The Pitch previewed the session, listed Charles Mingus, Eddie Harris, and White's own tunes in the repertoire, and said the record "could be a classic."
He was 9, The Pitch reported, when he saw Louis Armstrong play on TV and fell for the trumpet, and he kept going even when a lip injury, caused by an overzealous family dog, put his career in jeopardy. He's a native of Warren, Ohio, and trained as a classical musician. He holds degrees from Youngstown State and Northwestern and a doctorate from the University of Colorado, and in Denver he played in the Aries Brass Quintet and the Denver Brass.
His first record, Ancient Memories (1999), is a tribute to his parents, and In the Fullness of Time (2002), with pianist Art Lande, includes his original "Lil I," which was featured on the PBS special New Beginnings. Resonance (2007) is classical, and his most recent, The Serpent and the Dove (2020), is dedicated to the injustice and struggles of that year. On Capri Records he's recorded with tenor saxophonist Keith Oxman, and he's on Hard Times (1999) with Joe Bonner.
He has directed the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Jazz Quintet, and he has played trumpet in UNL's Faculty Jazz Ensemble. Bobby Watson has been his guest at least once more since that 2004 session, at Lincoln's Jazz in June in 2012.
