Lecture Overview
How much history is hiding in your skincare routine?
Behind the promise of clearer skin and a younger-looking face lies a darker story involving warfare, Pr*son experiments and deeply entrenched ideas about race, gender and beauty.
This lecture, we explore the unsettling history of how we have studied, treated and tried to transform human skin.
Who gets to define “good skin”? Whose bodies have been used to test new treatments? And when we change our appearance, whose standards are we trying to meet?
Drawing on her doctoral research into skin and identity, Julia will examine the connections between beauty, power and experimentation, revealing how much more than vanity is involved in the pursuit of perfect skin.
