Set against the charged intimacy of a Southern college town, Danny O’Dea’s debut follows Michael McKnight, a young man orbiting grief, desire, and moral uncertainty as he navigates friendship, sexuality, faith, and the quiet violence of complicity. When a series of mysterious packages begin arriving at an off-campus house, Michael finds himself drawn into a web of secrecy that forces him to confront not only what his peers are capable of, but what he himself is willing to ignore.
Moving fluidly between memory and present action, Packages is both a coming-of-age story and a reckoning—about masculinity, queerness, guilt, and the ways institutions and friendships fail the most vulnerable. With prose that is sharp, intimate, and darkly funny, O’Dea captures the intoxicating freedom of youth alongside its moral blind spots, asking how responsibility is formed, deferred, or abandoned altogether.
At once tender and unsettling, Packages announces a bold new literary voice and marks the arrival of a writer unafraid to look directly at the cost of looking away.
