Gabriella Smith: Carrot Revolution Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 14 in F-sharp Minor Op. 142
Traditional Folk Songs of Northern Europe (arranged by Danish String Quartet)
Frederik Øland, violin; Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violin); Asbjørn Nørgaard, viola; Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin, cello
The Danish String Quartet, one of today’s most in-demand chamber groups, are world renowned for their pristine performances and continually inventive music-making. The Quartet returns to DACAMERA with a highly personal, folk-inflected program.
The electrifying virtuosity of Carrot Revolution, by American comoser Gabriella Smith (“an outright sensation” The Los Angeles Times) opens the concert. Smith comments, “I envisioned Carrot Revolution as a celebration of that spirit of fresh observation and of new ways of looking at old things, such as the string quartet – a 250-year-old genre – as well as some of my even older musical influences (Bach, Perotin, Gregorian chant, Georgian folk songs, and Celtic fiddle tunes).”
Shostakovich’s soulful F-sharp Minor Quartet, a late work filled with the composer’s memories of his past, forms a powerful center to the program. The mood shifts again as the Danes conclude with their signature arrangements of Scandinavian folk songs, an audience favorite throughout the world. The entire concert, looking both forward and back, offers a compelling exploration of the age-old power of music.
"The Danish are remarkable, as ever – capable of intense blend, extreme dynamic variation (in which they seem glued together), perfect intonation even on harmonics, and constant vitality and flow.” — Gramophone
