Daniela Breeze’a z Loughborough University i Royal Historical Society, poświęcony historii etyki międzygatunkowej w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Nineteenth-century campaigns for animals in Britain are often told through laws and societies: the Cruelty to Animals Act, the anti-vivisection movement, the creation of the first Vegetarian Society. This lecture takes a different route, asking what happens when we follow the lives of two reformers from whom animals were intimate, formative presences rather than only objects of abstract thought and policy. Drawing on my current research, I examine Anna Kingsford (1846-1888) and Henry Salt (1851-1939), two of the most prominent but very different Victorian advocates of animal protection.
Through an animal-human biographical lens, I will explain how their ideas about kinship, rights, and religion cannot be understood apart from their relationships with the animals around them and the network of friends, critics, and fellow reformers in which those ideas circulated. The lecture introduces this relational approach to the history of animal ethics, shows how it enlivens our picture of Victorian reform, and reflects, finally, on what this history might offer present day debates about the political and legal protection of animals and nature.
