The Dunedin Jazz Club and Christchurch Big Band Festival present a unique collaboration between international Latin jazz pianist Dan Costa and Dunedin based musical director Bill Martin, as Costa performs Big Band versions of six compositions from his critically acclaimed Suite Três Rios album. Building on the success of Costa's 2024 Chamber Music New Zealand tour of Aotearoa, Costa and Martin will further develop their creative partnership through performances of six compositions from Costa's critically acclaimed album Suite Três Rios, arranged for big band by Martin. As part of his New Zealand Tour, Costa will be presenting workshops at the University of Otago and The School of Music at Ara Institute to offer local musicians the opportunity to understand and play Latin Jazz rhythms in a Big Band context.
The programme will feature newly commissioned big band arrangements by Martin of the movements Alba, Samba, Bossa Nova, Baião, Modinha and Aria, which all feature distinctive rhythms that shape Costa's unique melodic ideas. Taken together, these movements make up a Latin Jazz Suite that features the various sections of a Big Band while remaining faithful to Costa's artistic vision.
Dan Costa is an internationally acclaimed pianist who has composed and recorded three original albums of music, including Suite Tres Rios, Skyness and Beams. Recorded in 2016 with musicians such as Jaques Morelenbaum, Ricardo Silveira, Teco Cardoso, Rafael Barata, Marcos Suzano and Leila Pinheiro, the Suite Tres Rio was the outcome of Costa‘s Master‘s Degree in Music from UNICAMP in Rio De Janeiro, and explores a range of Latin rhythms fundamental to Brazilian folk music. In addition to topping the iTunes Chart in Portugal, the album was judged one of the best albums of the year by Down Beat Magazine and won a silver medal at the Global Music Award. Since the successful release of the album, Costa has released two more albums of original music, recorded with jazz luminaries such as John Patitucci, Dave Liebman and Mike Stern, as well as individual collaborations with Randy Brecker and Ron Carter. Costa regularly tours the world performing his own music and he enjoys collaborating with local musicians to present new versions of his original music.
Bill Martin is an acclaimed jazz pianist and saxophonist who composes and arranges original music for the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra and now assembles a professional Big Band under his own name for the very first time. Drawing on professional rhythm players such as Carl Woodward (drums) and Simon Eastwood (double bass), the band features the leading brass and wind players from the Dunedin Jazz Scene, featuring Nick Cornish (alto) and Ralph Miller (trumpet) from the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. Martin has released two original albums of music under his own name as a pianist and regularly performs with top musicians from New Zealand and Australia, including Umar Zakaria, Nick Granville, Oscar Laven, Roger Manins and Andy Sugg. Drawing on his experience of playing Costa‘s music as a tenor and soprano saxophonist, Martin has applied his specialist knowledge of the Big Band genre to adapt Costa‘s music for a fuller ensemble.
