Smyth became the first woman ever to be made a Dame for her services to composition, carving out a place in a world that insisted it was no place for women. But her legacy extends far beyond the concert hall. A committed suffragette, she stood shoulder to shoulder with activists in the fight for the vote – even serving time in Pr*son for her role in militant protests.
