Explore compassion through a mindfulness lens. Learn skills that be applied in clinical work or personal life.
About this Event

There are two wings to Mindfulness practice: the wisdom wing and the compassion wing.

This workshop will explore the compassion wing of mindfulness through the Buddhist “heart practices” of the Brahma Viharas or Divine Abodes: Lovingkindness, Compassion, Appreciative Joy and Equanimity.

Through these teachings and their practices, you can cultivate greater well-being for yourself, for your relationships, and for the world around you. The Brahma Viharas help us to incline the heart and mind to what’s beneficial and wholesome in this life, and to balance the survival-based tendencies of our human brains that scientists have dubbed the “negativity bias”.

About The Presenter
Joe Baillie is a Licensed Professional Couselor (LPC) and a certified meditation teacher who has worked in community mental health, addiction counseling and case management for the last sixteen years. He was trained in Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention in 2017 by the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness and completed a two year meditation teacher training certification in 2021 from the MMTCP Program in partnership with UC Berkley’s Greater Good Science Center.

About Holistic Presentations for Growth (HPG)
Holistic Presentations for Growth (HPG) is a community-based workshop series hosted and sponsored by The Viva Center. We foster an environment of inclusivity, respect, and curiosity. We believe that by coming together with open minds and hearts, we can collectively learn and grow. Presentations take place once a month Sept - June with different membership options available.
HPG is created to be accessible to all and in solidarity with that, we offer special pricing for those unable to meet the cost. Learn more about these options by contacting our client specialist ([email protected]) for access codes.

For Clinicians
The HPG workshop series is approved by the D.C. Board of Social Work for ten 1.5 hour workshops from Sept – June for a total of 15 CEUs if you attend all workshops. CEU certificates are emailed upon request in July. There is a requirement of 2 CEU credit hours or more for a certificate.
