Cult Movie Mondays: The Last Duel (2021)📅 Monday, October 12th | 🕗 8:00 PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Fourteenth-century France: two former friends turned bitter rivals, Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), settle their dispute the only way left to them - a duel to the death - after Carrouges's wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) accuses Le Gris of rape. Ridley Scott tells the same events three times, once from each character's perspective, in a structure lifted straight from Kurosawa's Rashomon: the tiny discrepancies between each version say more than the plot itself does.
Scott was 83 when he made this and shows no sign of slowing down - it's one of his most purely interesting films in years, anchored by Comer's performance as the one person in the story whose account nobody in power actually wants to hear. Written by Damon, Ben Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener, with Affleck clearly having a blast as a preening, bleach-blond count.
"What you'd call a humdinger."
- Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com
"A gripping true story that draws unsettling parallels between past and present."
- Rafer Guzman, Newsday
