On Friday, October 2, our anniversary opens with two co-headliners - and two very different ways of holding a room.
LIARS
is the project of Australian composer, producer and performer Angus Andrew. Across ten albums, it has become one of contemporary music’s most singular voices, with each release developing its own musical and conceptual logic.
Composition, field recording and improvisation all enter Andrew’s process as he takes apart the familiar architecture of a song to see what else it can hold. For The Apple Drop (2021), collaboration began at the outset, with avant-garde jazz drummer Laurence Pike, multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell and lyricist Mary Pearson Andrew. The album marked a departure from the solitary method of TFCF, pursuing, in Andrew’s words, “something bigger than myself.” His work outside Liars includes Beck’s Record Club and a vocal appearance on Xiu Xiu’s Oh No.
Live, he is joined by an ensemble, leaving room for improvisation rather than reproducing the recordings note for note. Pitchfork called Liars “one of the world’s premier art-rock bands”; The Guardian, “one of rock’s most interesting, slippery acts.”

LUCY KRUGER & THE LOST BOYS
Formed in 2015 by South African-born singer, songwriter and guitarist Lucy Kruger, the project took on their current form after her move to Berlin in 2018. Alongside Liú Mottes, Jean-Louise Parker, Gidon Carmel and Andreas Bonkowski, Kruger makes what the band calls “art-pop tender-noise.” Her voice can sit close to a whisper, then turn guttural, while the arrangements can begin in near silence and arrive at full force.
From the Tapes Trilogy and Heaving to A Human Home and 2026’s Pale Bloom, each release has expanded the project’s collaborative language. Touring has taken the band to Roadburn, SXSW and The Great Escape, alongside a 2023 Europavox Spotlight Prize. BrooklynVegan called Kruger “the real deal, with enough attitude and drama for a few bands.” 3voor12 put it more simply: “Americana for goths.”
