Based in Nashville and raised in North Carolina, Matthews is a preacher’s kid, a Black woman, a butch lesbian, and a proud Southerner whose bold blend of Americana, folk, country, and blues is steeped in tradition and driven by purpose. Her latest album, 'Reclamation', marks her most expansive and personal work yet. It’s a love letter to her roots and a defiant reclaiming of space: in Americana, in country music, in faith, and in the South.
Named 2025 Artist of the Year by the International Folk Music Awards, Matthews has earned acclaim for her warm, powerful voice and songs that illuminate injustice while uplifting the human spirit.
