Cross-Stitch : Tatreez Trees

Multisession Duration: 4 hrs completed over 2 days. Anyone who cannot attend both sessions may come to part one and will still leave with a single tree motif suitable for display.

In the first session we will learn the basic approaches of Tatreez, and how it differs from Amero-European cross-stitch. We will practice the basic stitch and start a single-colored tree motif. Students may finish the first tree during this session, or finish it between sessions.

We will start the second session with questions and troubleshooting any work done between classes. We will then learn a second version of the tree motif to finish the pattern. We will finish up the back of our embroidery so it is ready to hang.

The materials fee for this class is $10. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo.

• Learn the basic cross-stitch and approach to a Tatreez pattern
• Create 1-2 Cyprus tree motifs based on embroidery from the Hebron region
• Finish your embroidery so you can hang or display it

Kat Lombard-Cook is a designer, educator, and researcher. For over twenty years, she has used a variety of visual media from film to fiber to tell stories. Her embroidery practice centers on foregrounding the value of craft and preserving practices and knowledge for future generations. Kat has taken virtual classes from Wafa Ghnaim, author of Tareez and Tea and founder of the US Tatreez Institute, where she learned the skills she will be teaching. As a lifelong learner, she loves to learn new techniques and share them with others through her teaching.

Attire: Attendants should wear close-toed slip-resistant shoes (steel-toe work boots are ideal), long pants, and no loose-fitting clothing that could possibly get caught in machinery. Make sure to wear only natural fibers (i.e., cotton, wool, linen, etc) and bring reading glasses if needed for detailed work.
