🇹🇭 👇🏻Chilean drummer, composer and bandleader Cristóbal Tobar returns to Smalls with the Bangkok edition of his quartet, bringing together jazz, funk, soul and the groove-heavy side of his own writing.
Born in Santiago, Cristóbal studied drums at Universidad ARCIS and developed across several parts of Chile’s music scene at once. He became a regular around Santiago jazz clubs while also working with artists including Pedropiedra, Mariel Mariel, Daniela Spalla, Andrés Landon, Álex Ferreira, Javier Barría and Tiro de Gracia. His touring and session work later took him through Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Spain and the United States.
🥁 His own music has always leaned heavily toward rhythm. Cristóbal formed Nasty Trío in Santiago as a jazz-funk project, releasing Sucio y Sensual in 2017 and Palabra Cero in 2022. The latter mixed his original compositions with dub, post-rock and R&B influences alongside jazz. His repertoire also reaches back into Grant Green, Kool & The Gang, Duke Ellington, Boogaloo Joe Jones and other material where jazz and groove comfortably share the same space.
In 2025, a live recording of the Cristóbal Tobar Cuarteto captured another side of the project, pairing his originals with music by Grant Green, Nat Simon, Duke Ellington and Kool & The Gang. The personnel can change from country to country, but the idea stays centered on Cristóbal’s drumming, groove and arrangements.
