About this Event
At least a little plotting before you dive into writing a story, whether it’s short or long-form fiction, pays off. It helps you push the boundaries for your characters and you the writer. Guides you on how to entice readers, make them care, keep them reading and leave them satisfied.
This fun and interactive workshop with Sandi will explore plotting and how you can apply it to your way of writing. You will:
- Exchange group feedback on the opening paragraph of your story
- Understand the function of a story’s major dramatic question
- Draft one sentence about your story identifying its major dramatic question
- Examine story maps and beats
- Start to build your story’s arc
- Learn strategies for keeping the reader hooked
- Exchange peer feedback on the first page of your story
Please bring all the resources below (see WHAT TO BRING) as you will use them during the workshop.

What to Bring
• Printed copy of the opening paragraph of your story (length 1–5 sentences, maximum 100 words)
• Printed copy of the first page of your story including the opening paragraph (one A4 sheet, double-line spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font, 3cm margins all round)
• Printed single page with dot points about your story, aiming to answer these 4 questions: Who is the main character and what makes them compelling? What does the main character want or need? Who and what gets in the way of that? How does it end?
• A notebook and pen
• A laptop or tablet (optional)
About the Presenter
Sandi Wallace is a crime writer from Millowl / Phillip Island with publications including her latest release – tense, twisty, island-set psychological thriller WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW – four rural thrillers and two volumes of her short crime stories. Sandi’s debut novel TELL ME WHY won the Davitt Award Readers’ Choice and was shortlisted for the Davitt’s Best Debut. She has earned several Scarlet Stiletto Awards and commendations and finalled in other contests for her short crime fiction.
About the Venue
Berninneit is located at 91-97 Thompson Avenue, Cowes. There is parking nearby. The She Oak (Turrun) board room is located upstairs, above the Phillip Island Library, but there is a lift. If you have accessibility requirements please contact us via email: [email protected].
