Class Description
This class meets one time for 4 hours.
Learn to use the A2 sandblaster with stencils to etch designs, and finish your project with a powder coat finish. Students are provided with a stainless steel coffee mug and a selection of stencils to create your own compositions, or can use a pre-designed option. Select colors or clear coat to finish the project and leave with an understanding of all the processes involved.
The materials fee for this class is $25. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo.

Learning Objectives
- Learn shop safety and etiquette
- Understand a range of opaque and translucent powder colors and processes
- Complete a creative blasting and coating project from initial design to finished product
- Students who demonstrate ability to properly use and clean the sand blasting cabinet will be recorded as tool tested and ready to use it independently
- Students will be ready to tool test on the powder coating facility on a later date.
Instructor - Rachel Mello (Instagram @rachel.mello)
Rachel Mello (she/her) has been an artist, designer, educator, and color consultant for over 20 years. Her mixed-media constructions build out of her background in theatrical scenic art and set design, and her love for the quirky, playful, and weird.She has created exhibits for the USS Constitution Museum and Boston Children's Museum; has taught at Boston Architectural College, Emerson College, and Cambridge Center Adult Education; exhibited and sold her fine art out of galleries throughout New England in addition to participating in art fairs, creating commission work and building grant-supported work for Burning Man. She joined Artisan's Asylum to expand her access to equipment, new skills, and artist community.
Target Audience
This class is suitable both for people completely new to the equipment and also to those already trained who want to learn more creative applications of the processes.
Your Ticket and Materials Fee Includes
- Access to A2's Sandblasting and Powder Coating Shop and tools for the duration of the session.

- PPE will be provided for students who do not have their own.
Students should bring:
- closed-toed shoes required in the metal shop at all times
- recommend light-weight clothing in layers that can get dirty (powder coating room gets very warm)
- Most users who own a half-face mask prefer to use those. Any student supplied mask must be NIOSH-approved n95 or better.
Class Policies
Attire: Attendants should wear close-toed slip-resistant shoes. Make sure to bring reading glasses if needed for detailed work.
