About this Event
This hands-on workshop is an immersive journey into sustainable creativity and connection with nature.
You’ll learn how to make your own natural paints by extracting pigments from homegrown flowers, locally foraged plants, roots, and food scraps to paint on paper.
What natural ink is
Unlike synthetic art supplies, natural ink making is the art of extracting organic color from local botanics to create living colors for painting, calligraphy, and sketching.
This is exactly what we will be doing together.
Throughout the workshop, participants will be guided through the process of color extraction and application on paper:
- Ink extraction & modification: Learn step-by-step how to extract color from raw plant matter and refine it into usable ink. Experiment with pH modifiers to watch color transformation and shades.
- Binders: Explore recipes for binders and natural preservatives.
- Painting & creative expression: Explore different techniques including washes, layering and mark-making while using the dyes intuitively.
What is provided & what attendees will receive
Included in the workshop:
- All materials, tools and plant supplies.
- A curated array of pre-made inks from locally grown flowers and foraged botanics from Berlin to paint with.
- Your unique handmade ink and artwork to take home.
- Refreshments (tea/coffee, and homemade cake).
- A small bottle with your favorite ink to bring home and to continue creating.
What attendees should bring:
- Clothing that can get a little dirty or stained.
- (Optional) Your favorite brush, spatula, or calligraphy tool if you'd like to use your own.
Since these inks are derived from nature, they are dynamic, they shift, deepen, react, and evolve over time, offering a living medium that standard inks cannot replicate.
Working with natural colors invites us to embrace imperfection and let go of creative control.
No painting or ink-making experience is needed. Come curious and ready to experiment.
