Get ready for entertainment gladness: C.R. Avery is bringing his enchanting badness to town along with his band. After thirty-plus years on the road, crossing continental frontiers and honing his storytelling through prose and song, Avery still lays it all out and dives in headlong.
He's a multifaceted musician and spoken word poet drawn to “story-based music” while simultaneously singing, beatboxing, playing harmonica and pounding the piano. His genius lies in many genres—blues, hip-hop, spoken word, country and rock & roll all mixed together.
Avery has recorded twenty-six albums, written and directed musicals that were mounted and performed from New York to Australia, and written books of poetry alongside a career in painting and filmmaking. He has toured the world and over the years headlined or opened for artists such as Billy Bragg, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen.
His exhilarating shows have earned high praise from artists such as Tom Waits, while harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite declared, “No one plays harmonica like him, no one.” With his fearless style and genre-defying artistry, Avery has become what Last.fm aptly called “a one-man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica Americana iconoclast.”
Avery was one-third of the spoken-word “talk rock” trio Tons of Fun University (T.O.F.U.), alongside Penticton spoken-word artist Shane Koyczan and American poet Mighty Mike McGee. It was with this group that Avery caught the attention of Vancouver’s poetry slam scene, bringing keyboards, harmonica, poetry, and beatboxing together—simultaneously—in his performances.
