Cover Girl (1944) launches the Williamsburg Theatre Film Series, a journey through the theatre's films and history from 1933 to 1998, when it was known as the Williamsburg Theatre.
Built by John D. Rockefeller Jr., the theatre reflected his appreciation for motion pictures and their ability to bring people together. Opening during the same era as Radio City Music Hall, the Williamsburg Theatre was promoted as the “Little Music Hall”—a nod to its much larger New York counterpart.
Each film in the series will include an introduction with archival stories exploring the people, places, and events connected to the theatre and its time. Themes will include films enjoyed by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, as mentioned in letters to her sons; RKO Pictures, including the B-movies and film noir that helped make the studio famous; and selections from the Virginia Gazette, which will recreate what audiences in Williamsburg watched and experienced at the theatre during each era.
Cover Girl (1944) Rated G. 107 minutes. A dancer aspiring to be a Broadway star gets an offer to be a cover girl, but would be willing to keep her nightclub act if only the owner would notice her. Starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly.
Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center or Greenhow Lumber Ticket Office, and through the Call Center at 1-844-434-3243.
