About this Event
You will use a variety of techniques from collage (magazines, found images), drawing, and writing to build your own environment within a zine, which may be real, fictional, or somewhere in between! Through collage-making and journaling, you'll create a zine that expresses your sensory response to the environment and explores what defines your relationship with it.
What is a zine?
A zine is a small, self‑made booklet you can create quickly and easily without staples or specialist tools. During the workshop, you can make either an 8-page zine in a traditional format or an 18- to 32-page zine.
Coventry Art Show
Workshop Wednesdays are part of the Coventry Art Show, which is a local response to British Art Show 10. Coventry Artspace activities respond to the British Art Show theme, States of Nature. This theme is inspired by ecological philosopher Timothy Morton's call for greater awareness of our relationship with the environment. It challenges our human-centric perspectives and invites us to imagine a new relationship with the planet.
Tarla Patel
Tarla's art practice explores memory, belonging and identity through lens-based media, including analogue photography, digital formats, sound and new technologies. Collaboration and storytelling are central to her practice. She works with communities, academic institutions and public bodies to deliver workshops and support underrepresented voices. She is the custodian of the Masterji Photography Archive, a collection of family and studio portraits documenting South Asian migration to Coventry from the 1950s onwards.
