In-person Training at 7619 Memphis Ave., Brooklyn, Oh 44144

Presented by Michelle Sayer, LISW-S

This clinical workshop is designed for professionals in mental health, medical, and human services settings who work with individuals at risk for suicide. Participants will learn effective strategies for counseling individuals and families on temporarily reducing access to firearms, medications, and other potentially lethal means during periods of heightened suicide risk.

The training introduces the means safety framework, an evidence-based suicide prevention approach that can be integrated into existing risk assessment and crisis response practices. Participants will explore how reducing immediate access to lethal means can interrupt the suicidal process and create critical time and space for safety, support, and intervention.

The workshop will review practical options for increasing means safety and provide guidance on applying these strategies flexibly and collaboratively across a variety of situations. Participants will develop skills for addressing firearms, medications, and other methods identified in a person's suicide plan.

Because effective communication is central to means safety planning, participants will practice motivational interviewing techniques to support respectful, collaborative conversations with individuals and families. The training will also cover culturally responsive and technically accurate language related to firearms, helping participants engage confidently and effectively in these critical discussions.

Participants will learn to:

  • Describe the evidence supporting means safety as a suicide prevention strategy.
  • Explain how reducing access to lethal means can decrease suicide risk.
  • Identify practical options for temporarily increasing means safety.
  • Integrate means safety planning into risk assessment and crisis response protocols.
  • Apply motivational interviewing techniques to means safety conversations.
  • Use culturally sensitive and technically accurate language when discussing firearms and firearm safety.
