Cosmopolitan Mumbai: A Heritage Walk

Mumbai’s Fort neighbourhood is one of the city’s most remarkable architectural landscapes - a compact urban quarter where different architectural traditions, histories and communities have shaped the city over nearly two centuries.
Our Cosmopolitan Mumbai Heritage Walk is a 2-2.5 hr walk around the historic neighbourhood of the Fort area of south Mumbai. It begins at Aaram Vada Pav, where we start with Mumbai’s original street – food icon – the OG vada pav – before stepping into the historic heart of the city.
From here, the walk takes us through an extraordinary concentration of architectural styles. We encounter the dramatic Neo-Gothic architecture of the BMC headquarters and CSMT, the imposing Indo-Saracenic character of the GPO, the monumental Roman Classical language of the RBI and surrounding colonial buildings, and the elegant Art Deco architecture that emerged in Mumbai in the twentieth century.
Along the way, we explore the history of Fort through its grand public institutions, commercial buildings, civic spaces and streetscapes. The route takes us past the Asiatic Library, Horniman Circle, Elphinstone Building, St. Thomas Cathedral, Flora Fountain, Bombay High Court and the University of Mumbai, revealing how architecture became a powerful expression of colonial ambition, mercantile wealth, civic identity and modernity.
The walk concludes at Eros Theatre, where Mumbai’s architectural story moves into the modern age through its celebrated Art Deco landmarks.
Rather than viewing these buildings as isolated monuments, the walk explores Fort as a cosmopolitan urban landscape – where Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, Classical, Art Deco and modern architectural vocabularies exist within a remarkably compact neighbourhood.
A journey through Mumbai’s architectural evolution, from Gothic grandeur to Art Deco modernity.
