Coptic Bookbinding Workshop at RYE Bakery
Join artist and printmaker Maisie Keller for a hands-on introduction to Coptic bookbinding, hosted at RYE Bakery in Frome.
This relaxed morning workshop is designed for beginners and anyone curious about traditional bookbinding. You’ll be guided through the process of creating your own handmade open-spine Coptic journal, learning the techniques and principles behind the binding as you work.
What you’ll make
During the workshop, you’ll create your own handmade Coptic-bound journal, including:
- Folded paper signatures
- A hard cover
- An open-spine Coptic binding
- Decorative finishing details
What you’ll learn
The workshop will introduce:
- Bookbinding basics and terminology
- Paper grain and folding
- Preparing signatures
- Measuring and piercing sewing stations
- Using an awl and curved needle safely
- Coptic sewing and binding techniques
- Managing thread tension and creating a neat, secure binding
- Tips for continuing your bookbinding practice at home
You’ll be guided through each stage with demonstrations and plenty of time to work at your own pace.
What’s included
All materials and tools are provided, including paper, book board, thread, needles, glue and decorative papers.
You’ll also receive an informative booklet covering bookbinding basics, giving you something to refer back to when making books at home.
An optional take-home tool kit will also be available for anyone who would like to continue binding after the workshop.
About the tutor
Maisie Keller is an artist and printmaker with an MA in Multidisciplinary Printmaking and three years’ experience working with bookbinding and Artist’s Books.
