K²O’s season opens with a powerful meditation on freedom, dignity, and the ideals that bind a nation together.
Voices of Freedom reflects on America’s 250th anniversary by asking what freedom requires of a nation and its people. Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man begins with the belief that a nation’s strength rests with its people. William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony expands that vision through the resilience and depth of the Black American experience. In Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, Abraham Lincoln’s words take on renewed meaning through narrator Sean K. Ellis, whose life speaks to the difficult work of justice and the possibility of redemption. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 closes the program with music of extraordinary vitality, transforming struggle into the felt experience of liberation. Together, these works honor this historic anniversary with a renewed commitment to the unfinished promise of human freedom.
