EXPLORING REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS
Scheduled group: Pre-K–2nd grade
Students will meet some of the museum’s live reptile and amphibian
Animal Ambassadors, including animals such as lizards, frogs, and
snakes. They will:
• Discover the characteristics of reptiles and amphibians
• Examine animal-related specimens, called biofacts
• Create their own reptile or amphibian from clay
Students may observe the live animals but will not be permitted to touch them.
HERPETOLOGY 101
Grades: 3rd–5th
Length: 60 minutes
Students will discover what herpetology is and why reptiles and
amphibians are often studied together. With help from the museum’s
live Animal Ambassadors, they will:
• Explore the world of reptiles and amphibians, also called “herps”
• Learn what these animals need to survive and thrive
• Design an appropriate habitat for a reptile or amphibian
Students may observe the live animals but will not be permitted to touch them.
VIRTUAL-REALITY FROG DISSECTION
Scheduled group: 6th–12th grade
Length: Approximately 30–60 minutes
Students will use Meta virtual-reality headsets for an individually
paced, fully interactive frog dissection. The VR program was developed
by VictoryXR and Carolina Biological and allows students to examine a
frog’s internal anatomy without using a preserved specimen.
Only registered participants are allowed inside the classroom. Parents
and unregistered children must remain outside the classroom, although
they may stay on the museum premises. From our understanding, parents
may observe the younger students through a classroom viewing window.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• A minimum of 15 students is required in each class.
• Registration and deposits must be completed by September 19.
• Cost: $15 below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!
