Low back pain remains costly, complex, and frustrating for both patients and clinicians alike. Plus, many PTs report feeling inadequately trained on how to integrate the complex physical and psychological issues low back patients present with. Combining emerging biopsychosocial approaches, current research and accelerated skills practice is proving to be an efficient blueprint for PTs who want a more contemporary way to assess and treat LBP patients
Hybrid learning allows you to maximize time on foundational knowledge and valuable in person lab practice.
Through on-demand content, live instruction and feedback, hands-on lab activities, and real-world case studies, this course offers PTs the opportunity to strengthen evidence-based skills in medical screening, pain neuroscience education, manual therapy, exercise prescription, and comprehensive patient management. Create tailored, sustainable plans with the flexibility to adjust based on patient needs, body mechanics, and psychological factors. – all of which deeply impact how patients experience pain and recovery.
Evidence-Based Low Back Pain Assessment: Apply the biopsychosocial model, understand the role of imaging, challenge myths, and identify key prognostic factors that influence patient outcomes.
Screening & Differential Diagnosis: Confidently screen for red flags, fractures, non-musculoskeletal conditions, neurogenic pain, hip pathology, pelvic girdle pain, and pregnancy-related considerations to determine when referral is warranted.
Clinical Reasoning & Directional Preference Testing: Utilize the traffic light approach, force progressions, force alternatives, comparable signs, and examination findings to make informed treatment decisions.
Pain Science & Complex Patient Management: Recognize central sensitization and nociplastic pain, apply IASP criteria, understand pain neurophysiology, and implement targeted interventions for persistent and chronic low back pain.
Hands-On Treatment & Exercise Prescription Skills: Develop proficiency in lumbar mobilization techniques, apply test-retest principles, prescribe evidence-based exercise, and build individualized home exercise programs that improve patient adherence and outcomes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Discuss the contemporary understanding of low back pain: biopsychosocial model of health, imaging, pathoanatomic source.
2. Identify appropriate screening tools for non-musculoskeletal, low back pain and improve decision making to determine need for referral as well as identifying the most appropriate referral destination.
3. Apply an efficient and thorough subjective/objective exam using the latest evidence from LBP Clinical Practice Guidelines, which includes choosing the best examination procedures for patients with low back pain based on presentation.
4. Examine the evidence to determine intervention effectiveness in patients with low back pain.
5. Design an exercise program that is individualized to the patient to address functional deficits and patient goals using a patient-centered approach.
6. Describe how pain science and central sensitization mechanisms contribute to chronic low back pain patients along with strategies on how to manage these cases.
7. Demonstrate competent psychomotor performance and use of appropriate clinical reasoning when incorporating mobilization and manipulation techniques to the lumbar spine.
8. Apply the information learned in the course using specific case studies.
