Get ready for five days of singing, dancing, and performing at the Conservatory Musical Theatre Showcase. Students from the University of Regina Conservatory of Performing Arts’ youth musical theatre programs are sure to dazzle and delight the audience with their triple threat status.
Performances on DAY 1 (Saturday, January 9, matinee) will include the following (in performance order):
Advanced Glee (Saturday class) presents Footloose: Youth Edition, a 60-minute version of one of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top 40 score and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie. Based on the Original Screenplay by Dean Pitchford. Music by Tom Snow. Lyrics by Dean Pitchford. Additional Music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and Jim Steinman. Footloose: Youth Edition is directed by Karen Rose with assistance from Vamshi Vakulabharanam.
Advanced Glee (Tuesday class) presents ALL SHOOK UP Young@Part® is a hilarious and heartfelt musical with book by Tony Award®-winner Joe DiPietro. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT, it’s 1955 and into a square little town rides a guitar-playing young man who changes everything and everyone he meets. Featuring mega hits from the beloved Elvis® catalogue this musical fantasy will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” All Shook Up is more than just a musical—it’s a vibrant, joyous celebration of the power of love, the power of music, and the power of community, all while celebrating the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley®. This is a 60-minute edition of the full-length Broadway musical. Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley®. Book by Joe Dipietro. Young@Part® Edition adapted by Marc Tumminelli. ALL SHOOK UP Young@Part® is directed by Katlyn Redding.
There will be a 15-minute intermission between shows just to reset the stage.
