Join us for a special Conservation Day at the National Library of Wales, offering a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover how the Library cares for, preserves and makes its collections accessible for future generations.
Throughout the day, you’ll hear from members of the Library’s specialist teams, take part in practical demonstrations, and learn about the techniques and projects involved in caring for a diverse range of collection materials.
Whether you are interested in conservation, archives, libraries, heritage or digitisation, this event provides an opportunity to see the work happening behind the scenes and ask questions directly to the experts.
Programme
Arrival – Tea, coffee and biscuits
Start the day with refreshments and an opportunity to meet fellow attendees.
Behind-the-scenes tour of the Library
Take a special behind-the-scenes tour and discover more about the Library, its collections and the work that takes place beyond the public spaces.
Practical guidance and demonstration: Immediate care and preservation of collection items
Learn about the principles and practical techniques used to provide immediate care for collection items. The session will include demonstrations and guidance, with questions welcome throughout.
Lunch
Lunch will be available to purchase from the Library Café.
Conservation projects and techniques
Discover some of the Library’s current conservation projects and explore the techniques used by conservators in their work. This session will include presentations and practical demonstrations, with questions welcome throughout.
Digitisation projects and digital preservation
Find out more about the Library’s current digitisation projects, including digital preservation and the preparation of large-format material for digitisation. Discover how physical collections are prepared for digital access and the challenges involved in preserving digital information for the future. Questions are welcome throughout the session.
Afternoon tea and cake
Finish the day with afternoon tea and cake.
Come along, meet the people behind the collections, see demonstrations of specialist techniques, and discover how conservation and digitisation help preserve our shared heritage for generations to come.
