About this Event
Food. Culture. Community. Your ideas.
Type 2 diabetes affects too many families in our communities and the usual advice doesn’t always fit our foods, our culture, or our realities. Join us for a free, family-friendly community day where we cook together, share a meal, talk honestly about what helps and what gets in the way, and design real solutions together.
This event is co-hosted by Roots Community Services and Family and Child Health Initiative, Institute for Better Health, Trillium Health Partners.
This event is limited to the first 30 people who register on EventBrite!
✅ What’s happening
· Learn — See what we heard: findings from our community research, including photos and stories from Photovoice participants in Peel.
· Cook — Watch a live cooking demonstration with a local chef and taste affordable, delicious takes on dishes we already know and love.
· Connect — Over a catered lunch, join kitchen-table conversations about what matters most: food access, physical activity and recreation, family and cultural traditions, community programs, and the bigger system barriers.
· Prioritize — Rate the boldest ideas for change and see which ones rise to the top.
· Co-Design — Team up with other participants, organizations and researchers to turn the top ideas into real community- and family-centred program concepts for Peel.
· Share back — Hear the results, celebrate, and find out what happens next. Your ideas will directly shape the future of this project.
👥 Who should attend
· Community members and families from Peel’s Black, African and Caribbean communities — no research background needed, just your lived experience and ideas
· Anyone whose life is touched by type 2 diabetes
· Community organizations, service providers and researchers who serve these communities
