In this session, lead instructor Tess Burke will facilitate a conversation about making requests of ourselves and others stemming from our basic needs. Participants will practice making requests by stating their basic needs and direct observations.

Q: Who benefits from these conversations?
A: These conversations benefit parents, teachers, administrators, friends, and anyone who wants to develop coaching skills for facilitating empowering conversations in a safe and supportive environment. All community members are welcome to attend a single session or multiple sessions.
Q: How are sessions structured?
A: Sessions are 90 minutes, beginning with an overview of one or two coaching skills per class. Whole group time is spent clarifying technique, proposing real-life scenarios for practice, and reflecting on experiences. Time is allocated for practicing skills with individuals or small groups.
Q: Can I bring my child, spouse, or friend?
A: It is great to practice coaching skills with friends and family! We ask that all members are willing to participate in the coaching conversations.
Q: What is the cost?
A: We ask for a donation of $10-20 to cover the rental space, refreshments, and teacher's fee. No one is turned away for lack of funds.
Q: What kinds of skills do we practice?
A: We practice coaching skills from fields suchs as motivational interviewing, Atomic Habits, Non-Violent Communication, coaching frameworks, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and other fields.
Q: Can you be more specific about the skills we practice?
A: Examples include: making habits easy, accessible, attractive, and rewarding; identifying life goal desires and barriers; reflective listening and open-ended questions; disputing disempowering thoughts and phrases; making requests based on observations and needs; helping people achieve a calm state in the moment; and more.
Q: Who is the organizer/teacher?
A: The class is designed by local occupational therapist, Chris Wrzesien, who draws from experiences working with parents and children in the public school system. Classes may be led by other local specialists, which is listed in each event's description.
