About this Event
UCL East Community Cinema Screening is proud to host the screening of Go Fish (1994).
English | Romance/Comedy | 84 mins | 1994 | 18+
Max (Guinevere Turner) hasn't had a date in ten months. Enter Ely (V.S. Brodie) - older, a bit of a hippie, and not remotely her type. What unfolds isn't some grand love story so much as a string of funny and entirely recognisable moments: a stilted first date, a dinner party that turns into a game of I Never, phone calls that drag on far longer than they should.
Proceeding the success of The L-Word, Go Fish was shot in black-and-white for essentially no money. Hence, the film has the loose, lived-in feel of a film made by the community it's about - drawing on Chicago's real lesbian community. The cast were mostly friends and faces from the local scene and that DIY spirit runs through every frame. Rather than one central romance, it's really an ensemble piece: a whole world of lesbian friendship, gossip, bickering and solidarity, unfolding without a hint of self-consciousness or apology.
After landing at Sundance in 1994, it went on to be a commercial success, proving that stories about lesbian lives could travel far beyond the festival circuit. Thirty-odd years on, it remains relevant and is a lesbian classic worth revisiting.
