Inspired by Charlottetown’s remarkable “megaroost” of some 25,000 crows in Victoria Park, Common Sound IV brings together composer Sandro Manzon and the Charlottetown Improvisers Orchestra for The Birds: an original concert work conceived as a hypothetical score for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic cinematic thriller. The performance combines original notated music with the ensemble’s signature conducting language, through which musical ideas are shaped, transformed and directed in real time. Musicians from Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick move between tightly organized passages and unpredictable improvisation, creating a musical experience that shifts continually between order and chaos.
Drawing inspiration from Charlottetown’s winter crow population and the atmosphere of suspense cinema, The Birds imagines a sonic world shaped by mass movement, tension and collective behaviour.
