About this Event
COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE, the comic, vibrant, improvised theatre that originated in 16th century Italy, is full of comic stock characters - Masters, Lovers and Servants. Meet and play with Arlecchino, Pantalone, Columbina, Capitano, and the Zanni as they attempt to trick or help each other, searching for happiness, power and love.
The Commedia dell'Arte was a reflection of society with its characters, motifs and themes being of universal validity. As a result, the audience was able to recognise themselves, no matter which country or era they came from. The Commedia provides the foundation for so much of today’s Clowning.
We will explore and then play with the main characters to discover how status, use of space and rhythm can develop our physical play and expressiveness. We will then be able to create simple, strong, playful relationships first with each other and then with the audience before applying all this to original Commedia scenarios. All unmasked.
Our main focus will be upon play, physical rhythms, movement … and having lots of FUN!
