Coming Home to the Body offers a gradual and supported way to explore these connections through body awareness, movement, reflection and shared learning.
This six-session course will be therapeutically held by Michelle Goldsmith, a somatic-informed psychotherapist and former dance/movement therapist.
Together, we will explore how you relate to your body, emotions, nervous system and outward expression. The aim is not simply to introduce somatic or movement practices, but to help you develop a deeper relationship with your emotional self and explore what becomes possible when this experience is held in connection with others.
No previous experience of movement, yoga, somatic practice, counselling or psychotherapy is required. All participation will be invitational. You will not be expected to move in a particular way, speak in every session or disclose personal experiences that you would prefer to keep private.
Movement may be small, large or internal. Stillness, watching and resting are equally welcome. You may use the group to understand your relationship with yourself without sharing the details of your personal circumstances.
The group will be therapeutically held, meaning that participation will be paced carefully, confidentiality and boundaries will be explicit, and no one will be encouraged to move, speak or disclose more than feels manageable. There will be opportunities to share your learning and reflections in a contained group setting, but this is not individual or group psychotherapy and will not involve intensive trauma processing.
Many people find that this kind of gradual approach allows them to move closer to feelings or parts of themselves that have felt protected, distant or difficult to access, without becoming overwhelmed. It is an invitation to dip a toe into the waters of feeling something new, particularly where this may have felt inaccessible or frightening to explore alone.
You are welcome to participate in your own way. You are equally welcome whether you have a great deal to say, would prefer to learn and observe quietly, or need to stay towards the edge of the group while you become familiar with the space. Needing privacy or protection will not be treated as resistance or failure. Safety may begin with being allowed to remain less visible while still being included. Showing up without being required to expose yourself can be an important form of participation in itself. It is my intention that those who need the protection of “hiding in the back” will still feel recognised as part of the group.
